Why I Recommend Karndean Loose Lay (and Exactly When I Don't)

In a winter vs summer scenario—say, a sunroom that gets hot in August and cold in January—you might see gapping or peaking. Glue-down doesn't do that.

The honest answer: if your project involves high point loads or extreme temperature swings, pick a rigid core click system instead. Karndean's Korlok or Da Vinci lines are better suited there.

What About the 'Cheaper' Argument?

People often ask if Loose Lay is cheaper. The answer is 'it depends.' The material cost is comparable to mid-range glue-down LVT. But you save on adhesive and labor. On a 5,000 sq ft commercial job, that can be $1,500-$2,500 in saved labor and adhesive (based on contractor quotes I reviewed in late 2024; prices vary). But if you end up needing to grind the subfloor, that savings evaporates fast.

One time, a client wanted to use Loose Lay in a basement. The slab was 50 years old, cracked, and uneven. I told him it was a bad fit. He insisted. The install took twice as long because of grinding, and we ended up with gaps after a month. If I could redo that decision, I'd have pushed harder for a self-leveling overlay or just switched to glue-down. That's a learning experience I share with every new spec writer.

Addressing the Skepticism

  • Spaces with extreme temperature swings or direct sunlight.
  • Areas requiring heavy static point loads.
  • Subfloors that are uneven, painted, or questionable.

If you're in those 30% of cases, don't force it. Look at a glue-down or rigid core system. But if your conditions align, Loose Lay is a genuinely innovative product that saves time and money. And I say that as someone who's rejected as much product as I've approved.
